A great interview begins long before the microphone goes live. Students learn how to research a guest, understand the topic, identify the strongest angles and prepare questions that lead to meaningful answers. The focus is on knowing enough to stay confident while avoiding the mistake of over scripting the conversation. Students also learn how to build a running order, spot potential risks and create a clear purpose for every interview.
This module teaches the difference between ordinary questions and questions that open people up. Students learn how to ask clear, direct and engaging questions, when to use open questions, when to challenge and when silence can be more powerful than speaking. The module also covers follow up questions, listening for contradictions, avoiding waffle and keeping the audience at the centre of the conversation.
Not every guest is easy. Some avoid the question, some dominate the conversation, some become emotional and some try to control the interview. This module teaches students how to stay calm, professional and in charge. Students learn how to interrupt politely, bring a guest back to the point, challenge without sounding aggressive and end an interview strongly when it starts to drift.
